Submit an article for the blog
The Berkeley Public Policy Journal is the student-led publication of the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. We publish articles that critique, analyze, and provide recommendations on critical issues with the goal of influencing policy and stimulating public discourse.
Print submissions: We are no longer accepting submissions for our Spring 2024 print journal. Print articles consist of independent research on a timely policy issue and its design, implementation, or practice. They are published in our twice-yearly print journals. Submissions for print articles should incorporate independent research and support claims with original evidence (roughly 2,000-3,000 words).
Blog submissions: We welcome web submissions on a continuous basis. Blog articles are shorter and do not have to include independent research. They often discuss ethical questions and personal opinions on a particular topic. (max 1,500 words).
Submission Guidelines
Please submit your article by placing it in a Google document and including the document sharing link in the submission form below. Please make sure that your sharing settings allow for us to view and edit the Google document. If your submission is longer than 3,000 words, please submit a shorter expert (between 2,000 and 3,000 words) for the editorial team to review and include a link at the top of the document to the larger, full work (with the same sharing settings enabled).
Below are our general submission policies for print and web articles. Should you have any questions, please consult this website or email us at berkeleypublicpolicyjournal@gmail.com. Authors are encouraged to review past issues in our archive for a sense of the expected tone and content.
- Submissions must be original work.
- All submissions should be written for a general audience. Articles should be timely, jargon-free, and should support all claims with clear and convincing evidence.
- We encourage authors to include figures or illustrations to accompany your article.
- Submissions that have already been published elsewhere may still be eligible for BPPJ publication. Please note this in your submission form if this applies to your submission.
- We frequently choose articles for publication that are not in final form when submitted—we generally consider potential rather than polish. We encourage authors to submit articles for both the print edition and the blog even if they are not totally publication-ready.
